How to calculate Number of bricks and cement Sand for brick work

Good Day!.

Brick is one of the most common and traditional building material. Bricks are available in the market by different size and classification and we may choose it based on the design requirement.

bricks calculation formula

Now we going to discuss how to calculate the number of bricks for brick masonry.

Before that, you may interest to read concrete material calculation.

Let us calculate the number of bricks for 1 Cum.

Size of the Bricks – 225mm x 100mm x 75mm  mortar thickness – 10mm       Ratio – 1:5

Size of Brick

For calculation, purpose converts the Size of bricks into Meter.

So now the measurement in meter 0.225m x 0.1m x 0.075m and teh mortar thickness 0.01m.

Bricks Calculation formula

Volume of 1 brick without mortar  = 0.225 x 0.1 x .075 = 0.0016 Cum

The volume of 1 brick without mortar = 0.0016 Cum

Add 10mm thick on each side of brick as mortar thickness to find out the volume of brick with mortar.

cement consumption for brick work

Volume of 1 brick with mortar =  0.235 x 0.11 x 0.085  = 0.00219 Cum

Volume of 1 brick with mortar = 0.00219 Cum

Number of bricks with mortar for 1 Cum = 1/0.00219 = 456 Nos

So the required number of bricks for 1 cum = 456 Nos

Volume of bricks in 1 Cum = 456 x 0.0016 = 0.729 Cum

Now you have a question how to calculate the cement mortar consumption for brickwork?

How to calculate cement consumption in brickwork

Above brickwork calculation, we got that volume of bricks in 1 Cum = 0.729 Cum

So now the required volume of cement mortar for 1 Cum brickwork = 1- 0.729

Volume of cement mortar = 0.271 Cum.

Cement Consumption

Volume of the cement mortar = 0.271 Cum   and ratio of Mortar is 1:5

We find out the volume of mortar 0.271 cum in wet condition. (After the consolidation of Cement+sand+water). So in dry conditions, we have to add 30 to 35% sand bulkage and add 20% for wastage.

So the dry volume  = 0.2715+(0.271 x 35%) + (0.271 x 20%) = 0.42Cum

Mix ratio 1:5 – 1 part of cement and 3 part of sand (The sand quantity should take 3 times of Cement quantity)

So total part of mortar = 1+5 = 6

Cement = (0.42 x 1)/6 = 0.07 cum

To convert into cement bags  – (0.07 x 1440)/50 = 2.016 Bags

Now, Sand = (0.42 x 5)/6 = 0.35 cum

So the required material for 1 Cum brick masonry

Cement – 2.016 Bags

Sand – 0.35 Cum

Number of Bricks – 456 Nos

In earlier ,we discussed how to calculate the cement and sand quantity of mortar for plastering.

I know now you thinking how to calculate the number of bricks per Square foot or Square meter?

How to calculate the number of bricks per Square foot or Square meter?

Size of the Bricks

Half brickwork calculation

Area of 1 brick with mortar = 0.235 x 0.085 = 0.019 Sqm

So number bricks required with mortar = 1/0.019 = 52 Nos

So the required number of bricks per sqm for Half brick wall construction 52 Nos.

You may calculate the number of bricks and cement mortar in cft, then follow the above calculation by Feet measurement.
