Cement is the most required bonding material for construction works and it is available in the market by different types and grades based on the strength requirement.
Types of Cement Grades
The types of cement grade have classified based on its achieved compressive strength in 28 days test. The compressive strength is measured in Mpa or N/mm2. Basically, the grade of cement denotes its strength so we can choose the right cement grade based on our requirement. The grade of cement is mentioned in front of the cement bag.
Why was cement graded 33,43,53?
Before to know about the grade of cement, most of our construction standards are derived from British Standards even we were following the British education system only.
As per British Standards code EN 196 & EN 197, the grade of cement is listed below.
- 32.5 N
- 32.5 R
- 42.5 N
- 42.5 R
- 52.5 N
- 52.5 R
R – High initial strength cement N – Normal setting cement
Finally, we reformed the grade of cement as per IS standard as OPC 33, OPC 43, OPC 53.
OPC 33 Grade cement
The compressive strength of 33-grade cement is 33 N/mm2. These grade of cement used when high strength has not required for plastering, finishing works.
OPC 43 Grade cement
The compressive strength of 43-grade cement is 43 N/mm2. These grade of cement used structural works (Column, Slab and Beam) like small size buildings.
OPC 53 Grade cement
The compressive strength of 53-grade cement is 53 N/mm2. These grade of cement used when high strength required like high rise structure.
