# How to calculate Stair Case Steps – Example Calculation

Another little confusing task in construction is calculating the number of steps for a staircase. Apart from the Septic tank and water tank size calculation one of the mind-blowing thing in building construction is staircase design.

In a house construction, the staircase will take a certain area but our mind will not allow too much space. So that the staircase will be design based on the available area.

It simply easy when you understand the method of calculation and now we are going to discuss the staircase step design calculation.

## Minimum Specification Requirement of Staircase

• The Maximum height of Riser is between 150mm 200mm.
• The minimum Tread length should be 250mm to 300mm.
• Length of the step is should provide minimum 600mm.
• The handrail height should be provided minimum 1m for the staircase.
• The width of the landing slab will be provided at least 1000mm for the walk over on the staircase.

## Staircase Step Design calculation –  Example

Now we are going to calculate the required number of Riser and Tread for a Dog legged staircase having 3 m height and 4m width.

## Staircase Calculation Formula

Number of Riser = Height of Staircase/ Height of one number of Riser

From the above Diagram,

The staircase has divided into two flight to providing a landing slab at mid of the staircase height.

So Number of Riser = Height of Staircase / Height of one Rise

= 1500/150

= 10 Nos

So as per standard, we are providing 300mm as tread length.

= 3000/300

= 10 Nos

Hence the required number of Riser and Tread is 10 Nos.

#### Note:

The tread and rise size will be change as per the usage of the structure and locality. You may see the height of riser will provide 100mm or 120mm in the railway station and hospital building staircase.

Mostly senior citizens and sick people are using the staircase at the locality so that the Rise and tread size may provide an increase or decrease for their convenience.
